Sustainable Building Practices 2023

Blog Posts

While Colorado Springs has incredible views of breathtaking landscapes and endearing wildlife, we all know it also can offer some of the most challenging weather patterns of any locale in the country. Between bone chilling winters with significant snowfall, rollercoaster spring temperature swings, and summers filled with no humidity and high temperatures, Mother Nature certainly keeps it interesting in Colorado Springs. Because of this, it is important to be cognizant of more efficient ways to heat and cool living spaces. Also, with the growing population and increased water demands, Colorado Springs residents also need to be vigilant in conserving water. At Campbell Homes, we keep all of those things in mind and help make owning a home to be proud of easy.
Campbell Homes has been committed to a singular mission since 1965: building stylish homes from superior building materials and creating comfortable, desirable living spaces, all while providing the latest technology available.
“Choosing the right building products is one reason that Campbell Homes is known for quality. We don’t skimp or cut corners – we do the right thing for our buyers,” said Manuel Rodrigues, Vice President, Campbell Homes.
Our homes can be found throughout numerous communities across the city. Not only do we strive to create semi-customizable floor plans, but also impressive exterior design options. Now, those factors are easy to notice, but there are many, behind the façade which are not. While we pride ourselves on allowing our customers to customize the visual aspects of the home, what we install inside every home doesn’t change. We always offer the highest quality products and materials. We tap into the latest technologies and sustainable building solutions to help cut heating and cooling costs and minimize water usage.

How Do We Do it?

In a climate as varied as Colorado Springs, it is always important to have homes which are energy efficient, in order to keep energy costs reasonable. Add the fact we also have water shortages; it is important to keep in mind water conscious building solutions as well.
To that end, Campbell Homes Provides the Following Categories of Sustainable Building and High Efficiency Solutions:

  •  Insulation Solutions
  • Energy Efficient Appliances
  • Water Conservation Options

Insulation Solutions

Openings in any structure offer a concern from an insulation point of view. Drafty windows and doors can greatly impact the cost of heating and cooling a home. That is why at Campbell Homes we address each with superior materials. We use the following solutions:

  • Attic Insulation
  • Wall Insulation
  • Insulated Entry Doors
  • Insulated Garage Doors
  • Insulated Windows
  • Insulated Patio Doors

Campbell Homes uses blown-in R-50 fiberglass insulation for all attics and employs R-23 for all wall insulation. This provides the best insulation available to provide comfort to all interior spaces within the home. The higher the insulation rating, the lower the energy costs.
For all garage and entry doors, Campbell Homes only uses Therma-Tru fiberglass, insulated doors. They provide superior protection against drafts and high heating and cooling costs.
All windows and patio doors are double paned, energy star certified low-E vinyl windows from PRIME. We only use the series 6000 which offers a superior .30 u-value. When it comes to windows, the lower the U-value, the better the window insulates.
At Campbell Homes, we are always mindful of the impact of our building practices on the Colorado Springs citizens. We provide the best insulation available for all of our homes. We also apply self-expanding foam to seal around every window and every door to provide the best seal possible.
We also provide James Hardie exterior siding, trim, soffits, and fascia which all come with a thirty-year warranty. This adds to what makes us a unique builder in the local market. Our HVAC ducts are air-tight, offering high efficiency with no leaks, remarkably increasing efficiency and lowering costs.
All exterior walls have 7/16-inch OSB sheathing and our roofing shingles are GAF thirty-five-year architectural shingles.

Energy Efficient Appliances

One of the best ways to cut utility bills is by using energy efficient appliances. Each home we build includes the following high efficiency appliances:

    • Water Heater
    • Furnace
    • Fireplace Inserts
    • Refrigerators
    • Stoves
    • Dishwashers

Campbell Homes only uses Maytag or KitchenAid Energy Star appliances for all of our kitchen appliances. All Maytag and KitchenAid appliances come with superior energy consumption ratings. They also come in stylish finishes to match the décor desired.
We only use Rheem fifty-gallon water heaters. They have been the highest rated energy efficient water heaters for over twenty years.
Every home comes with a Lennox 93% high-efficiency sealed combustion gas furnace. Each furnace is carefully fitted with precision to ensure the most appropriate heating capacity for the given space of the home.
Our fireplace inserts are all Heat & Glo gas inserts and AFUE rated for energy efficiency.
All of our homes come with a Lennox M30 Programmable Wi-Fi thermostat or an Aprilaire Programmable Thermostat. The Lennox, available in our Signature Series homes, offers fully controlled options over wi-fi on your handheld device. This allows precise control of the temperature even while away from home, providing significant savings to heating and cooling costs. The Aprilaire, available in our Designer Series homes, allows custom programming to control temperature changes throughout the day.

Water Conservation Options

As the demands for water continue to grow, it is important all communities be mindful of water usage. In Colorado Springs, water conservation is critical. Campbell Homes is well aware of these concerns and employs various water conservation technologies to meet this end.

  • Water Smart Home Options
  • Viega ManaBloc Silent Water Plumbing System

The Water Smart Home Option is part of the standard features in the Base Home package for Campbell Homes. This includes the following:

  • Lavatory and Kitchen Faucets with 1 ½ gallon per minute limit
  • Showerheads with 2 gallon per minute limit
  • Water Efficient Toilets with 1 23/100 gallon per flush limit
  • Pressure Reducing Valves limiting static water pressure to sixty pounds per square inch within the home.

The Viega ManaBloc Silent Water Plumbing System offers Pureflow PEX tubing which comes with a ten-year warranty and a Moen Posi-temp scald protective valve in all showers to prevent accidental scalding.
Most importantly, the Viega ManaBloc complete water distribution system allows you to control every supply line from one location. It allows the homeowner to turn off water to each individual supply line. For example, if you’re going out of town, you could turn off water to the outside faucets, preventing any misuse and providing winter freeze protection.
By employing these water conservation appliances and devices, Campbell Homes exceeds water conservation standards for the Colorado Springs area.

In Conclusion

While the visual aspect of every Campbell Homes design is meant to offer the families living within them the ability to let their personalities shine, what beats inside each home is from the same efficient heart. Highly efficient appliances throughout the home and water conserving devices throughout, minimize the footprint on the community of each of our homes.
